Take Advantage of Amazon’s Kindle Matchbook Program

In true Amazon style the company has feature that shows they’re an innovating powerhouse in the global publishing space. Their focus on innovation is one of the many reasons why Amazon has been able to rise ahead of the pack as a global retail leader and leading publishing hub for authors and independent publishers.

Amazon’s Kindle Matchbook Program enables authors and independent publishers to offer their Kindle e-books at a discount when shoppers purchase the print book version.

This strategy of getting a free e-book version with the print book has been used by many authors, who typically offer those who purchase the print book, the opportunity to email their purchase receipt to a specific email address owned by the author, in which they can receive a complimentary e-book version. This is a popular practice used by nonfiction authors.

Kindle Matchbook is Amazon’s way of incorporating this strategy into their sales pipeline. Some will say this is a clever new feature, others will say it’s about time.

Remember: you must have a print version of your book available on Amazon to enroll in Kindle Matchbook

If you have an Amazon account with a published Kindle book, it’s easy to enroll.

Here are the steps:

1. Login to your Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) dashboard.
2. When viewing your KDP bookshelf, select the book you want, then click the ‘Rights & Pricing’ tab.

4. Now ‘save’ your Kindle Matchbook settings.

Things to keep in mind…

  • Those who purchase or have previously purchased a print book, will have the option to purchase the Kindle version of that book for $2.99 or less.
  • Royalties earned from the Kindle Matchbook program are based on the promotional list price. The list you choose can range between $0.99 – $2.99, or even free.
  • The price you list as the Matchbook discount price needs to be at least 50% lower than the normal list price your Kindle e-book sells for.
  • You don’t need to be enrolled in KDP Select to be eligible to enroll in Kindle Matchbook.
  • You can enroll or un-enroll your Kindle e-book from Matchbook at any time.

How independent authors can use Kindle Matchbook

It goes without saying that this is is another reason why you want to independently publish to maintain control, to capitalise on opportunities like Matchbook. Going through any other vanity publisher or small press who doesn’t offer anything you can’t do yourself, will hinder your ability to take advantage of this program.

One way you can use Kindle Matchbook as part of a promotion campaign, is the ability to offer a free Kindle version with every print book sold. This is a great tactic for new book releases to maximise sales during your book launch period by providing an incentive.

Have an email list? (I certainly hope so!) Offer your subscribers a limited window of a few days to purchase your new book and get their free or reduced Kindle copy.

There’s great potential with this new program. It’s quick, it’s easy and there are no additional costs in enrolling. Try it out.
